DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation and the assigned bus driver, assists students in boarding and leaving a school bus; assures the safety of students; maintains appropriate order and conduct on the bus; and performs related work as assigned.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Help students on and off the bus/van.

2. Maintain confidentiality of student information.

3. Learn nonviolent crisis intervention or behavior management strategies.

4. Ascertain that all students are safely seated according to instructions and regulations as determined by the Director of Transportation.

5. Ensure that all personal belongings/equipment of students (i.e. books, backpacks, etc.) are properly and safely secured during transit.

6. Monitor students’ behavior and maintains a quiet, orderly atmosphere on bus/van at all times to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

7. Assist Bus/Van Driver in maintaining clean conditions on bus.

8. Assist in the preparation of student referrals and maintenance of other bus/van operation reports.

9. Assist in the enforcement of District policies and procedures related to the transportation of students.

10. Assist in instruction of students regarding proper bus/van behavior and emergency procedures.

11. Alert Director and/or school personnel to special problems or significant needs of pupils. 12. Assist in administering first aid and CPR.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

 

Knowledge of:

1. Effective methods of working with students who have special needs.

2. Behavior management and motivation techniques.

3. Basic first aid and principles and procedures.

4. Routine record keeping.

 

Ability to:

1. Work effectively with students, co-workers, parents and the public.

2. Follow oral and written directions.

3. Prepare reports.

 

Training and Experience:

One year of experience working with children with special needs is highly desirable. Willingness to learn one or more nonviolent crisis intervention or behavior management strategies.

 

Licenses:

Possession of valid First Aid/CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Subject to reasonable accommodation review.

1. Subject to various road, traffic, and weather conditions, noise, and exhaust fumes.

2. Occasional lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing up to 25 pounds, such as wheelchairs and other transportation equipment. Occasionally team-lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

3. Bending at waist, kneeling, crouching to reach materials.

4. Reaching at and above shoulder level.

5. Gripping to manipulate objects and fine finger dexterity.

6. Various levels of standing, sitting, and walking.

7. Hearing and speaking to communicate with background noise.

8. Visual acuity to read documents and computer screens.

9. Subject to noise, odors, verbal and physical abuse from students.

10. Potential for contact with (bio)hazardous materials.
