DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, organize and coordinate the maintenance and repair of district vehicles and equipment; perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a variety of heavy and light district vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel and alternate fuel powered equipment; train and provide work direction to assigned staff.

 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  1. Assure that work performed is consistent with district standards by inspecting and maintaining district vehicles, including school buses in alignment with compliance standards.
  2. Inspect, diagnose, repair and rebuild mechanical defects in all district vehicles, power-driven equipment, related equipment and accessories, which may include engines, transmissions, drive shafts, other mechanical, electrical, ignition, and computer-related systems, carburetors, brake systems, steering, suspension and components, tires..
  3. Coordinate and schedule repair needs in house and with private repair vendors.
  4. Lubricate and service all district vehicles.
  5. Maintain records related to repairs made and time worked.
  6. Maintain repair parts inventory records; requisition parts, tools and tires as needed for all district vehicles determine need to order parts, order parts and equipment as necessary. Prepare necessary paperwork and reports.
  7. In conjunction with the Director of Transportation, write specifications for new buses and inspect upon
  8. Coordinate and maintain a preventive maintenance program and repair of district owned vehicles, power driven equipment, related equipment and accessories; maintain schedules and records pertaining to preventative maintenance and vehicle replacement. Estimate, plan, schedule and log all maintenance and repair using an electronic repair maintenance system.
  9. Assist as the Hazardous Materials Control and Waste Management representative for the department by maintaining proper records.
  10. Work with and around hazardous materials and may be required to participate in emergency cleanup of hazardous waste or material spills.
  11. May be required to drive a school bus to a location outside the transportation yard.
  12. Subject to responding to emergency calls after hours and on weekends relating to the transportation program.
  13. Prioritize and assign work to assigned staff.
  14. Provide input to the Transportation Director in the evaluation of assigned staff.
  15. Perform arc and gas welding and cutting; fabricate braces, fittings and parts unavailable due to age or structure.
  16. Make road tests as needed. 
  17. Maintain the general appearance of the buses; perform minor sheet metal work and paint as required.
  18. Perform repairs from the Driver’s Daily Reports and Work Orders.
  19. Install windows in vehicles and repair broken and torn seats of all district vehicles.
  20. Maintain and operate the district and auto repair shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly Perform auto shop and vehicle inspections, identify safety hazards; make necessary adjustments and recommendations; assure shop safety and safe operating of district vehicles and equipment.
  21. Assist with new vehicle purchases. Provide technical information regarding vehicle use and application.
  22. Basic computer operation.
  23. Maintain up-to-date education of current changes in technology on today’s vehicles. Remain relevant in the use of new technology as the technical complexity of vehicles is increasing with the use of computers, memory chips and airbags.
  24. Perform related duties as assigned.

  1. Operation and care of internal combustion and diesel engines and electrical motors.
  2. Laws and regulations pertaining to school bus maintenance and operations, including the California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code and Administrative Code.
  3. Health and safety regulations.

  6. Record keeping methods.
  7. Safe driving practice. 
  8. Regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and control and waste Management.
  9. Methods, tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, adjustment and maintenance of automotive equipment and of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems.
  10. Techniques and practices of maintenance and repair of heavy and light vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment.
  11. Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment.
  12. Technical aspects of the field of specialty.
  13. Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance.
  14. Sophisticated computer systems in newer vehicles.

Licenses:

  1. Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver’s License Class B with “Air Brake” endorsement; and “Passenger” endorsement (or the ability to obtain “Passenger” endorsement withing the probationary period
  2. Ability to meet and maintain qualifications for District vehicle insurance coverage.
  3. Forklift certification (upon hire).

 

Training and Experience:

Training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of journey- level experience in the repair and maintenance of alternate fuel powered equipment, gas and diesel-powered vehicles; three years of recent, full-time paid experience in the repair of a variety of vehicles, trucks, small tractors, and other power-driven equipment; advanced training and state certification is highly desirable.  One year of experience leading a staff is desirable.

 

Working Conditions:

1. Work is performed in an inside-outside shop environment with frequent exposure to weather, constant exposure to moderate to very loud noise; frequent exposure to dust, fumes (such as sulfuric acid, solvents, and ether), impact wrench vibrations, and moving mechanical parts; some exposure to high, exposed places such as on top of buses and other heavy duty equipment.

2. Work requires lifting 50 – 70 pounds, climbing and crawling, frequent demand for lifting 30 pounds and use of full range of well-developed physical capabilities, including hearing sound of engines and using sense of smell to detect fumes.

3. Pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying heavy objects.

4. Walking or standing for extended periods.

5. Bending at the waist.

6. Kneeling.

7. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

8. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal, power tools and equipment.

15. Must be able to adequately reach brake, clutch and accelerator pedals.

16. Must have sufficient vision to read written instructions and to observe and perform repairs.

17. Must be able to perform manual labor.

18. Sufficient hearing and speech to comprehend office conversation and to communicate orally in a clear, understandable manner.

19.
